Hi! I'm a lifelong resident of rural north central Pennsylvania, growing up in Potter and Cameron Counties. After a long career in education and healthcare, I am partially retired to our 34 acre farm in Emporium where we raise huacaya alpacas, dairy goats, numerous chickens and I get lots of time to use my creative talents in the fiber arts. I learned to knit and crochet from both my grandmothers with additional help from my mother.
My husband and I started out alpaca farm in 2009 when the rare opportunity to purchase acreage in Cameron County. After 2 years of updates - electric and water to the barn and acres of fencing, we welcomed our first alpacas. The herd now stands at 16 with plans to increase. Members of the Pennsylvania Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association (PAOBA) I volunteer with the fiber committee, participate in yarn dye days and help staff the PAOBA sales booth at the annual Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg, PA - the first full week in January. The farm show provides an opportunity for me to sell garments created from PA alpaca fiber.
At the Little Red Barn Farm we utilize sustainable farming practices such as rotational grazing, fencing animals out of creeks and use riparian buffers to prevent erosion, composting manure to use to regenerate our pastures and increase the soil fertility of our garden. Alpaca yarn is a natural fiber with lower environmental impacts, unlike petroleum based man-made fibers
About 5 years ago I took the plunge to purchase a 4-shaft floor loom, followed by an 8 shaft floor-loom and finally acquired a 4-shaft table loom. Books and YouTube have been a great resource in helping me learn various weaving techniques in making tea towels, shopping bags and rag rugs. A lifelong Girl Scout and granddaughter of folks who lived during the Depression, I do my best to reduce waster and reuse/repurpose items to extend their lives. Rag rugs and shopping bags woven from plastic bags are two product examples that bear out the saying, "Use it up, Wear it out, Make do, or Do without."
